The Halloween of 2018, which represented freedom and new beginnings to us in so many ways, I remember our neighborhood being overrun with tiny Black Panthers and Dora Milaje. Our friends’ baby was six weeks old and even he was Black Panther. Béla offered to change his costume to Killmonger so the baby would feel more powerful and righteous.
It was the first and only year my kids had entirely store-bought costumes. Because it was important. It was worth it. It mattered more than any clever thing I could have come up with.
He is a true hero. So many men will never know the depths of this giving.
